What it does
ChatGPT is a chat interface over OpenAI's models with a growing set of tools bolted on: web search, file analysis, image generation, a canvas editor for revising documents and code side by side with the chat, deep research that runs multi-step reports, scheduled tasks, an agent mode that operates a browser for you, and long-term memory that carries context between conversations. Since mid-2026 every plan, including Free, also includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, so the same account writes and runs code in a sandbox.
The model lineup is the reason people pay. Free users get GPT-5.6 Luna, a fast model with a Think button that switches to slower reasoning for harder questions. Paid plans run GPT-5.6 Sol with a reasoning slider from Instant to Extra High, and the $100 and $200 Pro tiers add Sol Pro and GPT-6 Pro for the hardest work. In practice the slider is the feature: you decide per question whether you want an answer in two seconds or a careful one in forty.
Where it wins
- Writing and editing. Long-form drafting, tone changes and structural edits in canvas are still the category benchmark. Independent reviews through 2026 consistently rank its creative and long-form prose ahead of Gemini's.
- Coding. Codex on every plan means a free account can scaffold a project, fix a failing test and explain a stack trace. The paid tiers get more runs and the bigger models.
- Voice. GPT-Live replaced Advanced Voice in July 2026 with full-duplex conversation: it listens while it talks, so you can interrupt naturally. It is the most natural voice mode we have used.
- Memory. ChatGPT remembers preferences, projects and past decisions across chats and lets you inspect and delete each memory. Nothing else in the suit is as mature here.
- The free tier. Unlimited text chat with a capable model is unusual. Most people trying AI for the first time should start here and only pay when they hit a wall.
Where it loses
- Integration. ChatGPT connects to Gmail, Drive and Calendar; Gemini lives inside them. If your day is Google Workspace and Android, Gemini's card is the one to read next.
- Value at $20. Plus buys you the model and higher limits, nothing else. Google's AI Pro is the same $20 with 5 TB of storage and a million-token context window.
- Cited research. ChatGPT's search is good, but Perplexity is faster and shows its sources more clearly for fact-finding work.
- Confidence. Like every model in the suit, it will state a wrong figure with the same tone as a right one. Check anything you will act on, especially dates, prices and citations.

Business and Enterprise plans add admin controls, no training on company data by default, and shared workspaces; pricing is per seat and quoted on request for Enterprise.

If you are choosing one assistant and you do not live in Google Workspace, this is it. Start on the free tier, move to Plus the week you notice you are waiting for limits to reset, and ignore Pro unless you bill by the hour.

- Gemini if you are a Google Workspace household or an Android user; the bundle decides it.

What is ChatGPT bad at?
It is not built into Google Workspace the way Gemini is, the $20 tier comes with no storage or app bundle, and for cited research Perplexity is still faster. It also remains confident when wrong, so verify anything you will act on.
