What it does

Gemini is Google's assistant and, since the I/O redesign in May 2026, an app that tries to run your day rather than answer your questions. The redesign, which Google calls Neural Expressive, folds Gemini Live voice conversation into the main app so you can switch between typing and talking without losing the thread. Around the chat sit Deep Research, Canvas for editing documents and code, Gems (saved custom assistants), Connected Apps, image generation with Nano Banana, video generation with Gemini Omni, audio overviews, slide generation and a Gemini Notebook that grew out of NotebookLM. On September 10 Google added a Windows app with a keyboard shortcut that opens Gemini over whatever you are doing.

Two features define the 2026 version. Daily Brief is a morning digest that reads your Gmail, Calendar and recent chats and sorts them into what needs attention now and what is coming up; it launched for subscribers in May and, as of September 8, is free to everyone in the US. Gemini Spark is a 24/7 agent that runs multi-step tasks on its own across Docs, Sheets, Drive and the web, including scheduled jobs that keep going for days while the app is closed. Spark started as a US-only beta for AI Ultra and, per Google's August 26 Gemini Live announcement, now requires AI Pro or higher.

The models are where the story gets complicated. Gemini 3.6 Flash, released July 21, is the everyday model on the free tier and the workhorse Google is proudest of: cheaper, faster and 17% more token-efficient than 3.5 Flash. Gemini 3.1 Pro is the reasoning model, rationed on free and expanded on paid plans. Gemini 3.7 Flash arrived on August 13 and powers Spark. Deep Think, the slowest and most careful mode, is an Ultra feature. What is missing is Gemini 3.5 Pro, the flagship that Google said in July was testing with partners and that Reuters and Forbes reported as repeatedly delayed through August.

Where it wins

• The bundle. AI Pro at $19.99 includes 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Vids, YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium, 1,000 Flow credits for video and higher NotebookLM limits. Nobody else gives you that much for $20. AI Plus at $4.99 with 400 GB and Gemini in Gmail is the cheapest paid assistant worth having.
• Workspace integration. Since September 9 every Gemini side panel in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides and Chat has the same abilities, so you can build a slide deck from inside Gmail or schedule a meeting from inside Docs. ChatGPT and Claude connect to Google's apps; Gemini is one of them.
• Context window. AI Pro raises the app's context to one million tokens, about 1,500 pages. That is the biggest working memory you can buy in a consumer chat app, and it makes Gemini the pick for dumping a whole folder of documents into one conversation.
• Daily Brief. Now free in the US, it is the single feature most likely to change a habit: open the app once in the morning instead of opening Gmail, Calendar and a to-do list.
• Spark's reliability. PCMag's June review called Spark the best AI agent it had tested, faster and more reliable than rivals, and The Verge's hands-on found it performed about as well as Google's demo. That is rare praise for an agent product.

Where it loses

• No flagship. With 3.5 Pro delayed, Gemini's best generally available reasoning model is 3.1 Pro, and it is behind OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Opus 5 on the hardest writing and coding tasks in our sessions. Google is still winning on price per task, not on the ceiling.
• Privacy defaults. Gemini Apps Activity is on by default, a subset of chats is read by human reviewers, and the auto-delete window is 18 months. The Personal Intelligence features that make Daily Brief and Spark useful also need standing access to Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube history.
• Tiered context. Free users get 32,000 tokens and AI Plus gets 128,000. If you want the million, you pay $19.99. ChatGPT's free tier does not slice the product this finely.
• Spark's case for existing. The same PCMag review found that "almost everything it does, Gemini already does", and The Verge said it is not worth the cost yet. It is US-only and needs AI Pro or above.
• Prose. For long-form writing and editing, Claude and ChatGPT still produce cleaner drafts. Gemini's answers are well laid out; the sentences inside them are the weakest of the three.

Plans and pricing, September 2026

Google cut the top Ultra tier from $250 to $200 in May 2026 and added the $100 tier at the same time. AI Plus listed at $7.99 in May and shows at $4.99 on Google's subscription page in September; if you see either number, that is why. Workspace Business and Enterprise editions include Gemini under separate per-seat pricing with different data terms.

If you use Gmail, Docs or Drive every day, yes. AI Pro is the best bundle at the $20 price point: four times the usage, a one-million-token context window, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage, Spark, NotebookLM limits, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium. If you only want the best possible model, ChatGPT or Claude may serve you better.

Does Gemini use my chats for training?

Yes, by default. Gemini Apps Activity keeps your chats for 18 months, a subset is reviewed by human reviewers to improve Google services, and the setting is on unless you turn it off. Business and enterprise Workspace accounts are covered by different terms.
