What it does

Descript transcribes whatever you record or upload, then binds the transcript to the media. Delete a sentence and the footage goes with it. Search for a phrase and you are at that moment in the video. Move a paragraph and the cut moves. Around that idea it has grown a full production app: multitrack audio, screen and webcam recording, remote recording in Rooms, captions, stock media, a timeline for the parts a transcript cannot see, and one-click publishing to YouTube and podcast hosts. Studio Sound cleans laptop-microphone audio to something close to a booth, and AI speech lets you correct a flubbed word by typing it in your own cloned voice.

Underlord is the 2026 story. It began as a menu of one-click fixes and is now an agent you brief in plain English: remove the retakes and filler from this 90-minute multitrack, label the speakers, pull six vertical clips, add captions, write the show notes. It reads scripts, watches footage, applies bulk changes across scenes, and converts documents, slides or blog posts into video. Descript added a vision-capable Claude model in June 2026 so Underlord can zoom into active parts of a screen recording and frame speakers on its own, alongside model options for faster or more deliberate edits, plus memory and custom instructions that persist across projects. In August it opened Underlord to automation: a video editing API, an MCP connection so Claude can drive it, a ChatGPT integration and Zapier triggers, so a new upload can arrive as a captioned rough cut for you to review.

Where it wins

• Dialogue editing speed. Reading a 40-minute interview is faster than scrubbing it. Word-level cuts, retake removal and filler stripping that take an hour on a timeline take minutes here, and the transcript doubles as a shareable draft a client can mark up.
• Underlord does the chores. The useful jobs cluster around cleanup and conversion, and it is good at them. Ask it for the boring pass and review the result; do not ask it to decide what the episode is about.
• Audio rescue. Studio Sound remains one of the best noise and room-tone fixes available without a plugin chain.
• Clean data posture. Sharing project data with Descript is an opt-in set at onboarding, production models use no user data, and subprocessors such as OpenAI are contractually barred from training on it. AI voices require consent.
• Pooled seats. Media minutes and AI credits are allocated per Editor seat and pooled across the drive, and Viewer seats are free, so a team pays only for the people who cut.

Where it loses

• Two meters, neither rolls over. Since the September 2025 pricing change every plan has a media-minutes allowance and a separate AI-credit allowance. Long-form podcasters exhaust minutes; short-form creators exhaust credits. Unused amounts expire monthly.
• Hobbyist cannot top up. Top-ups exist only on Creator and Business, and expire 12 months after purchase. Hit ten hours on the 18th of the month on Hobbyist and you wait or upgrade. Independent reviews we read put credit top-ups at about $35 for 350.
• It is not an NLE. No color grading, no motion graphics, thin compositing. Reaction shots, held silences and anything the transcript cannot see push you back to a timeline weaker than Premiere or Resolve.
• Accuracy has limits. Reviewers report transcription falling to around 85 percent with strong accents, crosstalk or poor audio, and Eye Contact correction remains inconsistent.
• Weight. Hour-plus multitrack projects can stutter on mid-range machines, and most AI features need a live connection.

Is Descript free?

There is a free plan with 60 media minutes a month and 100 AI credits that never refill, with watermarked exports. It is enough to learn the transcript-editing workflow on one short episode. The first paid plan, Hobbyist, is $16 a month on annual billing or $24 month to month.

What is the difference between media minutes and AI credits in Descript?

Media minutes are spent when you upload or record footage, one minute per minute regardless of what you keep. AI credits are spent when you use the AI tools: Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal, Eye Contact, green screen, AI speech and generated media. They are separate meters, neither rolls over, and running out of one does not free up the other.

What is Underlord?

Descript's agentic co-editor. You describe the outcome in plain language and it performs the edit across the project: removing retakes and filler words, cutting social clips, adding captions, framing speakers, turning a document or slides into a video. Since August 2026 it also runs from outside Descript through an API, an MCP connection for Claude, a ChatGPT integration and Zapier.
