Canva
The design tool that a quarter of a billion people open every month, and the one where AI is not a feature but the whole direction of travel. Here is what Magic Studio, Canva AI 2.0 and Dream Lab do, what the AI allowances on each plan really mean, and the price that has moved twice.

What it does
Canva is a drag-and-drop editor for anything visual: social posts, presentations, documents, whiteboards, websites, video, print. Its bet is that you start inside a design that already works and change the words and pictures. The AI layer, sold as Magic Studio since 2023, sits on top of that: Magic Write for copy, Magic Design for generating a set of on-brand layouts from a prompt or an uploaded image, Magic Media for images and short video clips, Magic Eraser, Magic Edit and Magic Expand for photo fixes, and Magic Resize for pushing one design into every format. Canva says those tools have been used more than 16 billion times.
Canva AI, introduced at Canva Create in 2025, wrapped the pieces into one conversational assistant on the homepage. It blends Canva's own models with Leonardo.Ai's Phoenix image model (Canva owns Leonardo) and partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic. Dream Lab is the dedicated image generator built on Phoenix, with presets, style references and multi-image batches. Canva Sheets brings data into designs, Canva Code builds interactive widgets from a prompt, and the late-2025 Creative Operating System launch added Video 2.0 with a proper timeline and Magic Video for turning raw clips into a social cut.
The big 2026 change is Canva AI 2.0, announced April 15 as a research preview and now listed as a feature on Pro and Business. It runs on what Canva calls the Canva Design Model, a foundation model trained to understand layout, hierarchy and brand. You give it a goal, a sketch or a brief and it produces fully layered, editable designs across every format for a campaign, then keeps going in chat: connectors to your tools, scheduling, web research, brand intelligence, Sheets AI and Canva Code 2.0. When you take over manually, it steps back.
Where it wins
- The blank page problem. Nothing else in the suit gets a non-designer from nothing to a presentable result faster. Magic Design and Canva AI 2.0 both start you from a working layout, and every element stays editable, which is the difference between this and a plain image generator.
- One place for everything. Copy, images, video, forms, scheduling, print and now ad insights all live in the same file. The Business plan folds in Flourish for data visualization and Affinity, Canva's professional design suite, is free to use on every plan.
- Brand discipline. Brand Kits, template locking and approvals on Business mean a ten-person team can churn out content that still looks like one company.
- The free tier is real. The full editor, 1.6 million templates, 4.7 million free assets and a monthly AI allowance. Someone posting a few times a week never has to pay.
- Provenance built in. Canva's AI Product Terms, effective March 16, 2026, prohibit stripping C2PA metadata from generated content and confirm you retain your rights in what you make.
Where it loses
- The AI meter. Every AI tool draws from one shared allowance: up to 200 Standard or 20 Premium uses a month on Free, ten times that on Pro, twenty times on Business. Ultra AI (the expensive video and image models) is capped at 20 uses on Pro and 40 on Business. Heavy users hit the wall, and the fix is the AI Pass add-on, which Canva prices only as extra cost; third-party trackers we checked put it at about $100 per person per month.
- Price creep. Pro has risen from about $13 to $15 a month on annual billing, and the per-seat Business plan replaced the flat-rate Teams plan, which is now closed to new sign-ups. A five-person team pays $1,250 a year.
- It looks like Canva. Template-led design produces template-looking design. For the handful of assets that define a brand, you still want a designer.
- Image quality trails the specialists. Dream Lab is good, and Business adds Leonardo.Ai Essential, but for photoreal hero images the dedicated generators still win.
- Pro is a one-person license. Invite a second editor and you are moved to Business. Several readers' surprise bills start there.
Plans and pricing, September 2026
| Plan | Price | What you get | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Editor, 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ assets, 1 Brand Kit, 5 GB, Affinity, up to 200 Standard or 20 Premium AI uses a month, no Ultra AI | Occasional posters, students |
| Pro | $180/yr for one person (about $18 month to month) | Background remover, Magic Resize, translate, 3.6M+ templates, 141M+ premium assets, 5 Brand Kits, scheduling, 100 GB, 10x the Free AI allowance, up to 20 Ultra uses, Canva AI 2.0, AI Pass add-on | Freelancers, solo businesses |
| Business | $250/yr per person, no seat minimum (about $25 month to month) | Everything in Pro plus team admin, 100 Brand Kits with approvals, Flourish, 10% off print, 500 GB, 20x the Free AI allowance, up to 40 Ultra uses, AI top-ups | Marketing teams, agencies |
| Enterprise | On quote | SSO and SCIM, custom apps, 1,000 Brand Kits, 1 TB, dedicated support at 150+ seats; Canva AI 2.0 marked coming soon | Large organizations |
Canva's pricing page shows yearly prices by default with a Save 16% label, which is where the month-to-month estimates above come from. K-12 schools and nonprofits get most premium features free. Existing Canva Teams subscribers keep their old pricing and features; nobody new can join that plan.
How the AI allowance works, checked September 2026: Canva counts uses across three tiers. Standard AI covers things like Magic Write and background removal, Premium covers most image generation, and Ultra covers the heaviest video and image models. Higher tiers consume more of your shared allowance, so 200 Standard uses and 20 Premium uses are two ways of spending the same pool, not two separate budgets. Check your balance under Settings, Billing, AI usage.
Score breakdown
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capability | 8.5 | Broadest creative toolset in the suit; Canva AI 2.0 is a genuine step; image models trail the specialists |
| Ease of use | 9.5 | The reference point for approachable design software |
| Value | 8.0 | Strong free tier and a fair Pro price; the AI meter and per-seat Business erode it for heavy users |
| Trust | 8.0 | Clear AI terms, C2PA provenance, privacy toggles; pricing has changed often |
| Ecosystem | 9.0 | Apps marketplace, connectors, Affinity, Flourish, Leonardo, print |
Verdict: the card most people should already be holding.
If you make visual content and you are not a trained designer, use Canva. Stay on Free until the AI meter or the background remover stops you, then take Pro on annual billing. Move to Business only when a second person needs to edit, and budget for the AI Pass if your team lives in the image and video generators.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT if you mainly want one-off images and copy and will lay them out somewhere else.
- Descript if video is most of your output and you want to edit it by editing the transcript.
- Notion AI if the documents matter more than the visuals and your team already works in Notion.
Quick answers
Is Canva AI free?
Partly. Canva Free includes an AI allowance of up to 200 Standard AI uses or 20 Premium AI uses a month, shared across every AI tool, and no Ultra AI at all. Pro gives ten times that allowance and Business twenty times. Once you hit the cap, the AI tools switch off until the month resets.
How much is Canva Pro in 2026?
Canva's pricing page lists Pro at $180 a year for one person, which is $15 a month, with yearly billing saving about 16 percent against paying monthly, so month to month works out at about $18. Business is $250 a year per person with no seat minimum. The old Canva Teams plan is closed to new sign-ups.
What is Canva AI 2.0?
A conversational, agentic version of Canva announced April 15, 2026 and built on the Canva Design Model. You describe a goal or paste a brief and it produces fully layered, editable designs across formats, then keeps editing with you in chat. It is listed as a new feature on Pro and Business and marked as coming soon for Enterprise.
