What it does

Notion AI is the AI layer inside Notion's pages and databases. The center of it is Notion Agent, a chat that can read your workspace, your connected apps and the web, then act: draft pages, build databases, fill properties, write formulas, translate, produce a PowerPoint or an Excel file, and, since July 2026, run your Outlook or Gmail inbox and calendar when you ask. AI Meeting Notes transcribes and summarizes calls with speaker labels, up to ten hours per user per day, and can trigger a Custom Agent when a note is finished. Enterprise Search, still labeled beta, answers questions across Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, Jira, GitHub, Linear and your email, with citations. Research mode writes longer reports.

Custom Agents went to general availability on May 4, 2026. They are agents you configure with instructions, context and a trigger, and they run on their own. Notion 3.6 in July let external agents such as Claude and Cursor take tasks from a shared board, and Notion 3.7 on September 15 added Skills: reusable instructions your team stores in a library, runs with a slash command, and can export as a SKILL.md file to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini or Grok. Custom Agents can now call other Custom Agents as sub-agents. Under the hood Notion uses models from OpenAI and Anthropic among others, and an August 2026 update gave the model picker a scorecard for speed, intelligence and cost.

One product left the deck this month. Notion Mail, the AI Gmail client launched in April 2025, shut down on September 22, 2026. Notion said more than half its users were letting agents handle email without opening the inbox, so it is going all in on agents instead. The Gmail connector, email blocks and agent mail tools keep working.

Where it wins

• Context. The agent already has your project plans, tasks, docs and databases, plus whatever you connect. A chat assistant has to be told all of that every time.
• Meeting notes. Speaker-labeled transcripts, summaries and follow-ups land in the same workspace as the project, and the July 2026 trigger means an agent can update the tracker and post the recap before you are back at your desk.
• Enterprise Search. One search box across Slack, Drive, Jira, GitHub and email is the feature teams describe as the reason they upgraded.
• Skills and sub-agents. The September release is a serious attempt to make good prompting a team asset rather than one person's habit, and the export to Claude Code and Cursor is unusually open.
• Data posture. No training on your workspace by default, contractual bans on subprocessor training, and zero retention on Enterprise. That is cleaner than most consumer assistants.

Where it loses

• The entry price. Plus does not include AI. If you want it as a daily tool, the floor is $20 a member a month on yearly billing or $24 monthly, double the Plus seat. A ten-person team goes from $1,200 to $2,400 a year before any credits.
• The trial is one-time. Free and Plus get a limited number of complimentary AI responses. Every Try again counts as another one. Notion does not publish the number, and it does not refill.
• Credits are hard to budget. Custom Agents cost $10 per 1,000 monthly credits ($13 per 1,000 on annual pools) and Workers join that meter on October 15, 2026. Notion does not publish a per-task figure, so the first month is a guess. Credits pause agents when they run out and cannot be bought on Free or Plus.
• Product churn. Notion Mail lasted 17 months. Anyone who built a routine around it has spent September exporting snippets and scheduled emails.
• Not a writer's model. For long, careful prose the standalone assistants are still better; Notion's strength is acting inside your workspace, not drafting a novel.

Notion's pricing page shows yearly rates by default and advertises up to 20 percent off for annual billing. Guests are not billed on any plan. Business trials include free Workers during the beta.

Quick answers

Is Notion AI a separate add-on?

Not any more. Notion's help center says Notion AI is only available on Business and Enterprise plans, and the pricing page shows Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search as included on Business at $20 per member a month billed yearly. Free and Plus get a limited number of complimentary AI responses to try it, and they do not refill.

What are Notion credits?

A usage meter for the autonomous features. Custom Agents are free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly credits, and Workers start consuming credits on October 15, 2026. Credits can only be bought on Business and Enterprise, so a Plus team that wants an automated workflow pays for the upgrade first.

Does Notion AI train on my workspace?

No by default. Notion states it does not use workspace data or personal information to train its models and that its LLM subprocessors, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are contractually barred from training on customer data. Enterprise adds zero data retention with those providers.
